Oil on canvas. Bolognese school of the late 17th-early 18th century. The beautiful scene illustrates the Gospel episode , recounted in the Gospel of Luke, of the visit of Mary, already expecting Jesus, to her cousin Elizabeth, who is to give birth to John the Baptist. The meeting between the two women, in which Elizabeth recognizes Mary as the 'Mother of her Lord,' gives rise to the poetic song of the Magnificat, in which the Virgin extols the power of the Lord who used her for the plan of salvation. This is the moment immortalized by the painting, that of the proclamation of the Canticle: Mary praises God, while Elizabeth greets her with tenderness; on either side, in the background, the two male figures, on the right Joseph, Mary's husband, and on the left Zechariah, Elizabeth's husband, participate in the event as spectators. The scene is set at the entrance of a building that recalls the style of the pictorial period. The composition and style recall the manner of Marcantonio Franceschini (1648 -1729), an artist active mainly in Bologna. The painting has been restored, but is still in first canvas. It is presented in a late 19th-century gilded frame.
