Jens Praet at Sebastian + Barquet

Substance

This month, Belgian-born, Tuscan-based designer Jens Praet presents his first solo show in New York, entitled Substance, at Sebastian + Barquet. Celebrating his ongoing passion for material exploration and his penchant for mixing avant-garde techniques with traditional handcrafting, Praet is showcasing three series: a new edition of his ongoing Shredded series, furniture and accessories inspired by office waste and composed of donated Art + Auction magazine scraps and clear resin; Dressed, a collection of aluminum and brass structures draped in bronze casts of fabric scraps; and Processus, hand-painted tiles depicting the blueprints for the overall design on top of European walnut structures.

As Praet tells us, “Substance can mean any form of physical matter, whether we are talking about material re-use, material trompe-l'oeil effects, or construction reflections as blue-prints.”
